Ode to the Hottest...

In my line of business, I spend countless hours etching and sketching out artistic styles unique to each individual I encounter. There is something about the fellowship between stylist and client that transcends business. For me, having serviced anyone for over five years, it becomes very difficult to refer to some...

MUCHO CALIENTE...

Heat damage is a texture killer coming in second after creamy crack. Because we have a head full of healthy natural hair, there’s a tendency to believe that it too is ironclad. Wishful thinking… for some of us high temperature flat-ironing and pressing can cause irreversible consequences; especially at 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. I know first hand what many are facing. After high heat straightening, our tresses lose elasticity, lacks luster and volume, as it once had. I hate to be the bearer of… Continue

HAIR LIES THE TRUTH...

As many of us may recall, some lofty superstition passed down by family. Growing up there were a plethora of old wive’s tales that plagued me. They each weighed heavily in my mini psyche, but still I carried them, dutifully, over into my adult life. There were a couple that forbid particular acts, for no rhyme or reason aside from being cursed with bad luck; all of which became a force of habit.

Like the one that restricts opened umbrellas inside the house or the placing of hats on… Continue

Developing and Maintaining Healthy Natural Hair

The Answer to Healthy Natural Hair

Varying Hair Textures

Dear Nap Specialists,

I had a perm and have been growing it out for about 18 months and only pressing my hair. I want to be able to make the transition to wearing my hair completely natural, BUT it seems tht one part of my hair grows in very coarse and curly, while the other side grows in coarse with a SLIGHT wave. As of right now I use argon oil products on my hair which are great for moisture, but I really want to know what I can do or use on my hair for the texture…

Making the Twist Out last

HELP!! I am perfecting my twist out by tweeking the technique and products I use but even though I get 2-3 days of good wear as soon as I workout it becomes one big puff.  I don't have time to re-twist my hair during the week so my workout sessions are becoming fewer and further between.  I had great hair this week because I didn't workout.  Not a good thing.

What can I do to maintain my twist out while I workout?  What products provide a good hold to twists without drying the hair? …

Getting Pass the Puff

Dear Nap Specialists,

I've got a problem and I'm open to suggestions. I've been wearing my 100% hair pulled back into a puff for the last 3 years and it's time for a change. It's no longer cute. I need a style which fits my active lifestyle. A wash and go would be fab but I'm afraid of the shrinkage.

HELP!,

Lisa Lisa…

What Should I Do With My (Natural) Hair?

What should I do with my hair, Chimere?

I get this question at least once a day. And my question for you is, “What would you like to do with your hair?”

The question stems from not knowing what to do with the mixture of permed and natural new growth. And I totally understand. But ladies, we have to come up with some ideas. As a natural hair stylist, there’s a few categories I use when decided what will fit my client’s personality. (and since…
